Learning to make the Atomium (with Anton Lukoszevieze), various medias, 2008 This project is an attempt to construct the replica of the Brussel’s Atomium building using the materials found at home. Artist used his daughter’s playing balls and several stacks of books to “construct” the highly primitive, individual version of the Atomium. The structure which artist has built in his room is a “loose” model of a unit cell of an iron crystal which is as well the structure of Brussel’s Atomium designed by Belgian engineer André Waterkeyn for Expo '58, the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. This collection of works include the Atomium postcard stamped in the year 1958, video documenting the Atomium model made from the earpicks, another video shows the book-mounted “atomium” from all the angles, there is also the photo with the roughly drawn threads that connect the “atoms” and underlines the crystal structure of the whole model. The last element of the installation is the photograph of the model arranged and photographed by Anton Lukoszevieze (Norwich, UK) according to the instructions by Bumsteinas (this photograph is an aluminium print done from a wet-plate collodion negative). This project was for the first time realized as one tousand postcards designed and printed by SMC/CAC for the exhibition Lithuanian Art'08. Photography.
